Australian Air Pilots MBF provides financial support when your ability to fly is affected by medical conditions that impact your Class 1 Medical Certificate. Our Cover is designed to support you financially, whether you lose your Class 1 Medical temporarily or permanently.
Monthly financial support
If you temporarily lose the privileges of your Class 1 Medical Certificate, you may receive Monthly Benefit payments to help meet everyday expenses.
How it works
- Monthly Benefits start after any personal/sick leave is used and a 28-day waiting period has passed.
- The amount paid depends on your income and level of cover. Monthly Benefits up to. $15,000
- We do not offset. A Monthly Benefit is paid regardless of other earnings, unless you are receiving statutory or third-party payments (e.g. WorkCover), in which case we may provide a top-up.
Capital Benefit for permanent loss of licence
If you permanantly lose the privileges of your Class 1 Medical Certificate, you may be eligible receive a lump sum payment (Capital Benefit Balance). This is payable after an 84-day waiting period and if you receive a lump sum from another provider, there is no reduction in your Capital Benefit Balance because of it.

- Up to $1.2 million of Nominated Capital Benefit may be available, depending on your joining age.

Additional Free Death Benefit
A Death Benefit may be paid to your nominated beneficiaries in addition to your remaining Capital Benefit Balance.
What this means
- The Death Benefit is available from the first day of membership.
- This Benefit increases each year of Membership.
- Death Benefit can reach $400,000 maximum
Trauma Benefit for critical illness or injury
In the event of a critical illness or injury, MBF may provide immediate support through a Trauma Benefit. This can offer access to funds when you need them most.

- No special medical exam required to join, making it easier to access cover.
- Some mental health conditions covered under the Rules.
- Bulk billing for employer allowance where applicable.
- Refund of Contributions available after 20+ years of membership to a maximum of $75,000.
Wait periods explained
- Monthly Benefits begin after 28 days from the Date of Onset or occurrence of an Aeronautical Significant Event/ Condition (ASE/C).
- Capital (lump sum) Benefits begin after 84 days from the Date of Onset or occurrence of an Aeronautical Significant Event/ Condition (ASE/C).
